October 1, 2026, marked the 59th anniversary of the first session of the North Carolina Court of Appeals. The North Carolina General Assembly created the Court of Appeals in 1967 following a 1965 amendment to the North Carolina Constitution which authorized its creation. The first six judges on the North Carolina Court of Appeals were Raymond B. Mallard, David M. Britt, Hugh B. Campbell, Walter E. Brock, James C. Farthing, and Naomi E. Morris. The Court published its first opinions in 1968. We are thankful to all of the past and present judges and staff of the North Carolina Court of Appeals for their dedication, hard work, and significant contribution to the administration of justice in the state of North Carolina.
